the many qualities of night air

Twelve summer nights on the forever young Island. Roll when making camp, or when someone steps out of the firelight and you want the Eternal Summer to react.
Roll a d12:
- Warm and gold, like an afternoon that refused to end. Nobody needs sleep. Anyone who keeps watch anyway sees the Boy pass overhead, and he waves.
- Lagoon air — salt, flowers, and something singing underneath. The sirens know your name. Whoever listens longest learns one true thing about their past and loses one small thing from their pockets.
- Cannon smoke, rolling in off a sea-fight. The ground shakes softly all night. By dawn there is salvage on the beach worth carrying, next to the losers.
- Glittering air you can swat at. Everyone is lighter tonight. Anyone laughing hard enough can't quite keep their feet on the ground.
- A ticking on the breeze — faint, patient, downwind | Someone nearby is being followed by their own doom. Neither is interested in you, unless you interfere.
- Bonfire smoke and drums, from a camp over the pass. You are being watched. Before midnight, a messenger: an invitation or a warning, and it is solemn either way.
- Utterly still, thick with jungle flowers. Sleeping here gives true dreams of home. Wake with a shell in your hand that whispers sweet nothings.
- Green-smelling, electric — rain coming off the sea. The Island is rearranging. By morning, one path you know leads to somewhere new.
- One cold thread through all the warmth. For a moment every leaf shivers at once. It passes. The oldest kid at the fire looks old.
- Wet metal and candle wax, from somewhere under the hill. Gold moved tonight. Tracks in the sand at dawn — walking pace, heavily laden, no shoes. |
- Kite weather. The wind whirls dust into shapes. Anything thrown comes back. Anything let go doesn't.
- A perfectly ordinary summer night. Every bird on the Island is awake, silent, and facing the sea.
